Days before the release of Kindle2, John Siracusa has a fascinating read on the past, present, and future of e-books.
The once and future e-book: on reading in the digital age – Ars Technica.
The e-book format is an interesting one, but one that as yet, has to gain mainstream traction in the market. Some see the Kindle, iPhone, and even Google as fueling the e-book revolution, but it remains to be seen if eBooks will ever catch on as much as digital music has.
The second aspect of the debate, is who will come out on top in the e-book market. Amazon has certainly been making inroads with the Kindle, and by all outward appearances Kindle2 is a significant improvement over its predecessor.
But at the same time, do people need an additional single purpose device, or will the iPhone become people’s go to choice for long form reading? Already, two camps have emerged.
For this one, only time will tell, but it certainly seems like technology and design will advance e-books significantly in the coming years.
