So I’m just arriving here at Pittsburgh airport and I need to clear something up with people who are more knowledgeable than I. What is the generally accepted practice for Crackberry users on the airplane?
Stupid question? You tell me. This entire flight I sat next to a guy who absolutely would not shut the damn thing off… Not even for take off and landing. As for me, I dutifully switched
my iPhone over to airplane mode once the plane started taxiing and then shut it off for take off. After that I fired it back up and enjoyed some Tiesto podcasts during the flight. Meanwhile Mr. Addict over here never once flipped the switch even after being directly asked to by the crew. Instead he’d tuck it away for a minute or two and then bust it out again as soon as the flight crew had passed. Nonstop.
I wanted to offer some choice words while he was typing away during landing but decided against it. Perhaps if I’d had an inflight cocktail.
Have I missed something here?

That guy is clearly a jerk. Considering that your phone or Blackberry or whatever, will only be off for a few minutes during take off and landing, I see no problem with turning it off.
At altitude, it should be off no matter what. You’re not allowed to have cell phones “active” on airplanes for one reason or another, probably depending on the pilot’s controls and communication, and it is very bad form to leave it on (and potentially dangerous).
Also, at 35,000 feet while traveling several hundred miles per hour, I can’t imagine a Blackberry would be all that useful as I doubt you’d have a signal…
Simply, you were sitting by an idiot and a jerk.
